Design Spotlight: Marc Jacobs

I guess it’s natural that fashion designers should live in fashionable homes. After all, their gimlet eye is what drives the details that go into the apparel they design. Many designers’ homes have become legendary, the homes of Bill Blass, Ralph Lauren and, of course, Yves St. Laurent being among them. Marc Jacob’s Manhattan apartment, featured in this month’s Architecture Digest, exemplifies the type of refined, sophisticated style that reminds us of those earlier fashion icons.

Jacobs’ apartment defies a set style. Rather, it’s a slick mix of Art Deco, 1970’s cool, and great contemporary art. Designer Thad Hayes and later John Gachot, former assistant designer in Thad Hayes’ office, helmed the project. They helped assemble Jacobs’ formidable collection of pieces by Pierre Chareau, Diego Giacometti, Samuel Marx and Eugene Printz into one fabulous but sublimely understated whole.
