New in Store: Monumental John Ulbricht Works

On Madison is pleased to offer two paintings by the Cuban born artist John Ulbricht. Large in scale, these two oil on canvas works were both painted in 1961 and are bold examples of mid-century abstract works.

John Ulbricht is a Cuban born painter who was born in 1926. He immigrated to the United States and studied at the Chicago Art Institute. He married and he and his wife, a fellow artist, toured Europe, eventually setting in Mallorca, where he continues to live. His works have been sold at auction, including most recently Christies in London in 2010. His works have been on exhibit at the Dallas Museum of Art, Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts and the Norton Simon Museum, among others.

Hello and welcome to the blog. I guess you could say I’ve been addicted to beauty since a very young age. I was the only 8 year old girl I knew constantly re-arranging the furniture in my bedroom and making floral arrangements from the flowers in my backyard. Even at a young age, I realized I “felt” better when my room was neat, organized and most of all beautiful.

As a designer and retail store owner, I get to see beautiful things everyday. This is certainly one reason I do what I do. I never tire of creating beautiful spaces, whether it’s for a client, in my shop or my own home. Beauty is everywhere and I started the On Madison Blog to point out that inspiration comes from many sources.

I’m inspired by fashion, art, architecture, film, food, travel, you name it. Diana Vreeland famously said “the eye has to travel.” To have a curious eye, means you have to feed it. Hopefully, On Madison and Madison Modern Blog can help your eyes get their daily diet of fabulous!

I opened my vintage and modern furnishings, art and accessories store, On Madison in Pasadena California, January 2014. I hope you stop by and visit or read the blog as a source of inspiration. Enjoy!

Fuschia Swivel Chairs

Doesn’t everyone love transformation of one sort or another? Whether it’s a new coat of paint or a new hair color, I think seeing something miraculously transformed from the ordinary and mundane into something fabulous gets everybody’s juices flowing.

Case in point is this pair of 1970’s swivel chairs. We purchased them at an estate sale and loved their cool shape and polished chrome base. However, the sad mismatched upholstery had to go.

Two weeks later and these chairs are screaming “GLAMOROUS” with this mod fuschia faux suede from Opuzen Fabrics. Transformation accomplished!
