A Look We Love

Form and Function

Anyone who knows me knows I hate practicality. The word practical has always implied, for me, something that is “good” for you (think spinach and sensible shoes). But I confess there are certain areas of the home where practicality is necessary, the breakfast room being one of them. I’m pondering this because my breakfast room is ready for a makeover and, of course, my design compass is set for glamorous, but the reality is that it needs to stand up to the abuses of a 16 year old teenage boy and his friends.

With that in mind, On Madison has assembled a montage of breakfast rooms that will stand up to your daily grind while looking fabulous at the same time. See our inspiration images and shop the looks below!

Lacquered Trestle Table and Elliot Chairs Don’t let the chairs fool you. You can’t “kill” these brass framed Elliot chairs, especially when upholstered in a vinyl, leather, or indoor/outdoor fabric:

Concrete table top with modern chairs: Keep a sealer on this concrete topped table and it will be impervious to just about any abuse. Modern chairs in metal and vinyl stay chic yet are family friendly.

French Connection

The combination of a classic French pied-a-terre appointed with decidedly modern elements is, for me at least, irresistible. Throw in a 1940’s sofa upholstered in leopard and turquoise, and you’ve really got my attention. These ultra chic digs belong to Almine Rech, a Paris gallery owner, who has steadily cultivated a diverse stable of both young and established artists, since mounting her first show in 1990 in Paris’ Marais district. Her apartment, in Paris’ genteel 16th arrondisement, features works by many of the artists she represents. The bronze “garbage bag” is actually a sculpture by Gavin Turk, an artist whom Rech represents.

Chic Planète

While in Paris, I picked up the latest issues of French Architectural Digest and Elle Decoration.  European design magazines are a bit hard to find here, but it’s always a treat to check out the best of European design.

Which brings me to the spread in French AD on designer Kara Molinari’s uber chic Paris apartment.  I am especially loving the bold use of lapis lazuli blues mixed generously with gold and polished chrome accents.  The golden herringbone floors and stark white bois detailing accented with gold reinforce the modern Parisian chic vibe.
