Michele Bönan: A Gentleman of Style

For those of you that follow this blog, you know that I have certain designers for whom I have intense crushes: Jean-Louis Deniot, Pierre Yovanovitch, and Jean Dunand and being among them. I recently became familiar with the designer Michele Bönan and was immediately smitten.

Michele Bönan is a Florence based architect and interior designer who gained notoriety when he was tapped by the Ferragamo family in 1995 to design the first of their luxury lifestyle hotels, The Hotel Lungarno in Florence. He has gone on to design all of the Ferragamo hotels and recently published his first book, Michele Bonan The Gentleman of Style.

Mr. Bönan’s rooms are a combination of timeless, classic elegance infused with a modern edge. On Madison has put together a photo montage of some of our favorite rooms. Let the swooning begin…

Design Profile: Jacques & Dani Ruelland

One of the great pleasures of being in the design business is discovering the work of artists that have remained a bit under-the-radar. Such is the case with the work of artists Jacques and Dani Ruelland. Both Ruelland’s had artistic training: Jacques as a painter and Dani as a sculptor. The young couple combined talents and began working with ceramics in a studio at the Ecole des Beaux Arts in Paris, setting up their own studio in 1954. They exhibited regularly in Parisian galleries until the early 1990’s.

More recently, fashion designer Raf Simons auctioned off his extensive collection of French ceramics. In December 2013 at the Piasa Rive Gauche, the auction “French Ceramics: 1945-75” (Paris, December 17, 2013) included 10 vases by Jacques & Dani Ruelland. Pre-auction estimates were between $9,500-12,000, with an actual hammer price coming down at $19,300. Said Simons, “Their vases are very romantic and powerful, perhaps because they are the work of a couple.”

With their chic and sculptural simplicity, On Madison thinks their work will not be under-the-radar for long.

Carrying the Torch..iere

When does lighting and sculpture come together to make one fabulous thing? When they come together in the form of a torchiere or floor lamp. Floor lamps provide function and high drama. A properly placed floor lamp or tochiere can add stature to almost any space. Of course, like any other aspects of design, the art is in the mix. Try a mid-century Italian floor lamp next to a classic French bergere chair. Or put an organic looking floor lamp next to a sleek modern sofa. You get the idea.
