New Years Eve Dream List

I just finished “The Last Swan”, the memoirs of legendary beauty, hostess and design maven, Marella Agnelli.   From a prominent family, she married Gianni Agnelli, the heir to the fabulous Fiat fortune and was one of Truman Capote’s infamous “swans.” Reading her memoirs, and the fact that New Year’s Eve is right around the corner, I couldn’t help let my mind wander and fantasize about my dream guest list for my imaginary New Year’s Eve bash. Here is a partial list, in no particular order.

Diana Vreeland –   I have discussed her fabulousness many times in this blog. I could listen to her “Vreelandisms” all night long.

Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis – I confess that she still fascinates me.

Truman Capote – the ultimate party favor. Never boring.

Jean Louis Deniot – my current design crush.

Yves St. Laurent & Pierre Berge –   for tips on what to collect next.

Kelly Wearstler – brand building 101.

Jean Michel Frank – how is it that you were so ahead of it all?

Angelina Jolie – is she really that beautiful in person, or is it just good make-up?

Brad Pitt – is he really that handsome in person, or is it just good make-up? He also is a bit of an architect and designer himself.

Andy Warhol – how to make millions on elevating crass commercialism into high art.

Peter Marino – for all the dirt he could dish on his days at Andy Warhol’s factory.

Anna Wintour – after seeing “The Devil Wears Prada” I couldn’t possibly resist comparing her to the Meryl Streep character.

Coco Chanel – because you can never have enough Chanel.

Gratitude

Like everyone else, the last few weeks have been non-stop hustle and bustle. Let’s face it, braving the malls, grocery stores and post office doesn’t exactly always make one feel very Christmasy. But today, as I looked at my lovely dining room table, set with all my very best things, and put the last pie in the oven, I couldn’t help think how blessed I truly am. Tonight we will enjoy the company of family and friends, delicious food and wine. I have a wonderful husband and son who bring me endless joy. And did I mention that I love going to work every day to my beautiful store where I get to be surrounded by beautiful things.

Christmas DecorSo with that in mind, On Madison would like to wish everyone Happy Holidays and a wonderful New Year. Thanks to my staff and wonderful clients and patrons who have helped make our year very bright indeed.

 
 

Peter Marino: Tough but Chic

Peter Marino is one of those people who exemplify the adage “don’t judge a book by its cover.” One look at his regulation uniform of black biker leather and one tends to be a little intimidated and perceive Marino as one tough guy. But his body of breathtaking design work dispels all that and one is left with awe at how this much beauty has come from one designer.

tough but chicMarino is the subject of a new blockbuster exhibition at Miami Beach’s Bass Museum of Art. We get a glimpse of not only his work but his spectacular art collection and what makes this guy tick. Entitled “One Way” it implies that Marino has pointed his singular eye to only that which pleases him since he graduated from architecture school at Cornell.  He began collecting art during his stint working for Andy Warhol in the 70’s. Marino had no money, so Andy paid him in art. From there, Marino began his remarkable career and there has been no looking back.

Louis Vuitton Peter MarinoAlthough Peter Marino designs beautiful houses for beautiful people, On Madison is enamored of his commercial projects which include flagship stores for Vuitton and Chanel among many others. We think this is Marino at his creative best.
