Inner Zen

It seems I’m feeling very zen these days. That must be why I’m loving the paired down, somewhat austere aesthetic which reminds me of quietly spiritual places.

Inner Zen On Madison 1I adore the use of carefully raked gravel surfaces punctuated by the simple but strong geometric shapes of the fountain and staircases. Inside the house, Caruncho continues the spare, sculptural look in the lime mortar and Russian pine curved staircase.

Orlando Diaz-Azcuy: Paired Down Country Estate

I have long admired the work of Orlando Diaz-Azcuy. This Cuban-born designer is rightly credited with helping to popularize the spare, minimal modern look that is both timeless and fashion forward. In the latest issue of Veranda, Greg Stewart, one of the principals of Orlando Diaz-Azcuy Design Associates, plies that cool aesthetic to a version of a French country estate.

Country Estate

While not exactly minimalistic, the estate resonates a sort of monastic chic. Creamy marble pavers, clean modern columns and simple window treatments give this space the feeling of an abandoned European convent, made over for the 21st century.
