Spotlight: Fall 2015 Interior Design Trends

I must confess, October has to be my favorite month of the year. The light is starting to change, the weather is cooler (in L.A. maybe not so much) and I’m starting to drag out my boots and jackets. For me, fall means the holidays are right around the corner and I definitely am thinking about home more than usual. That means sprucing up the house to reflect the season.

On Madison is profiling Fall 2015 design trends with the idea that even a touch of this or a little hit of that can put your space in Fall state of mind.

Color – think spice market and you’ll get the idea. Turmeric, curry, cognac, indigo, eggplant and olive conjure up fall warmth. Navy and ruby bring a royal luxe to the party. Metal, especially copper and bronze, warm even the coolest of decors.Wallpaper – I confess to loving wallpaper, especially when it’s wallpaper as art. Porter Teleo gets it right with their organic, abstract papers that make a Statement.

Geometrics mixed with organics – geometrics bring the high watt energy. Try mixing these with organic elements and the geometrics take on a more refined direction. See how the Rose abstract rug by Calligaris pops with a modern organic wood dining table and stark white fabric covered chairs. Graphic prints – instantly update your space with a punch of graphic style.Electric hues mixed with black – chartreuse and black, fushcia and black, turquoise and black. These beautiful pieces were created by Ben Medansky for Kelly Wearstler. Black, white and metal – I don’t think I will ever grow tired of black, white and brass. This is simply a divine look. Design Spotlight: Memphis Style

You may have noticed that we talk an awful lot in this blog about the decades of the 60’s & 70’s. Perhaps it’s the nostalgia that those were the decades of my youth, or perhaps because they were so darn cool. The 1980’s is often to referred to in not-so-glowing terms characterized by big shoulder pads and even bigger hair.

Ettore Sottsass, a Milanese architect, is one of the coolest things about the 80’s. Sottsass pioneered what came to be known as the Memphis Group. The name comes form the Bob Dylan song “Stuck Inside of Mobile with the Memphis Blues Again” which was playing all through night while Sottsass and his cohorts were creatively putting their heads together. Memphis style is considered Postmodern furniture, characterized by colorful decorations, often made in plastic laminate, and asymmetrical shapes. It is both playful and fairly bizarre at the same time.

This month New York’s Friedman Benda Gallery is introducing Ettore Sotsass: 1955-1969, featuring rare furniture, ceramics and objects (some never seen before in the United States) produced when the designer was still refining his radical point of view.

Regardless of whether you love it or hate it, the upcoming exhibition is an ode to a design icon of whom it can be rarely said, was a true original.

As Clear as Black & White

I never tire of black and white. Color thrills, but for timeless chic the combination of black and white never fails to produce elegantly inspired rooms that always get my attention. When it comes to travel or work attire, black and white punctuated with great jewelry or a vivid shoe is the go-to fashion that always delivers.
